‘The vermilion coloured Hanuman, found in most temples has a story associated with it.
Once, Sita, after finishing her bath, applied sindoor in the parting of her hair. Seeing this, Hanuman asked her why she did so. Sita explained that applying sindoor would bless Rama with prosperity and longevity.
Later, Hanuman goes to the throne room, smearing himself with sindoor all over his face, body and clothes.
Rama, asks Hanuman the reason behind his adornment. Hanuman explains about his conversation with Sita and adds that if a small amount of sindoor has so much significance on Rama’s life, what would be the result if it is applied throughout the body.
Rama being impressed by Hanuman’s love gave a boon wherein those who apply sindoor on Hanuman and perform Hanuman pooja, will be blessed with prosperity and longevity.
Hence, Sindoor mixed with oil is applied on the idols of Hanuman.’
